Confidence Trumps Competence

Is competence or confidence more important? This question comes up repeatedly, both in the context of leadership and in the context of gender — and you likely have a clear opinion of which one you favor.

Karen Clark will discuss the following:

  • Our society is built to grow men’s confidence and marginalize women. This phenomenon begins to show up statistically in junior high school.
  • Girls begin to shrink back; and this shrinking carries into adulthood.
  • Confidence trumps competence in our society; confidence is the foundation for success and the key to shaking the imposter syndrome.
  • That’s why men for instance, are more comfortable applying for a job with 50% of the qualifications; but women feel they need 90-100%.
  • What is your confidence level and how do you increase it?
